Sarah was born and raised in Eastern North Carolina and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she majored in English and Comparative Literature and minored in History.
Prior to law school, Sarah spent a gap year in the North Georgia mountains working at a personal injury firm and interning at the local public defender’s office. These seemingly opposite areas of law had one important thing in common: They both required the lawyers to represent the disadvantaged side in the fight towards justice. Whether it was representing the criminally accused against the government, or an insured person against a wrongdoer or an insurance company, Sarah found this imbalance to be, not only unfair, but also incredibly stressful to the clients she assisted.
Learning from the best attorneys in the region, Sarah witnessed firsthand the life-changing value that a genuine, considerate, and above all, skilled attorney could provide to clients and their families as they took on the legal system together as a team. That experience led her to dedicate her career to trying cases and negotiating settlements on behalf of those who needed it most—Those who had the scales of justice tipped against them from the start.
After graduating from law school, Sarah worked at the Wake County Public Defender’s Office in Raleigh, NC, where she represented hundreds of clients accused of misdemeanors, including assaults, drug and firearm possession, resisting police officers, larceny, begging, racing, traffic violations, and DWI. This position was fast-paced and demanding, yet highly fulfilling. Here, Sarah sharpened her trial skills, motions practice, and creative negotiating. Unique to this position, she was also able to spend hours of time face to face with her clients each day. She developed a heart for walking with her clients on their worst days, and this is what led her back to personal injury law.
Sarah’s training in defective products, toxic exposures, and dangerous drugs & defective medical devices began at a prominent personal injury law firm in Raleigh, NC. Comfortable with providing stellar legal representation despite a high caseload, the complex litigation / mass torts realm was a natural fit for Sarah’s expertise and interest in client care. She successfully represented clients across many different Multi-District Litigations (MDLs) in many different states. She spoke with clients daily, carefully explaining the life span of a defective product or toxic exposure case once it became absorbed into an MDL. These cases take years to reach resolution, so Sarah quickly became a trusted, available resource for clients when they called to check in on their cases. Sarah worked with clients affected by Smith & Nephew metal-on-metal hip implants, faulty 3M Earplugs, Toxic Water at Camp Lejeune, Hair Relaxers, Paraquat Pesticide, RoundUp Weedkiller, Zofran causing birth defects, CPAP Machines, Elmiron, Risperdal, Hernia Mesh, and other defective products.
In 2021, Sarah and her husband welcomed their first child. Becoming a mother further inspired Sarah to fight against the manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, and other wrongdoers who were either marketing defective products and harmful drugs into our stream of commerce, or releasing toxic forever chemicals into our environment. The Stumps welcomed their second child in 2023.
Now, Stump Legal, PLLC, is the culmination of Sarah’s sharp legal skills and unique vision for client-focused care.
